Hazlewood Marshes at Aldeburgh represent one of the largest unmanaged inter-tidal habitat creation projects in the UK. Its transformation from fresh water grazing to salt marsh is not only fascinating, but one of Suffolk’s best kept secrets.

Hazlewood Marshes Nature Reserve

Leave the waymarked Sailors’ Path to cross gorse-laden heathland and head into the Suffolk Wildlife Trust Hazlewood Marshes reserve. Walk the causeway, past outstretched mudflats and salt-blasted skeleton trees, to the remote and isolated bird hide at Barbers Point for awesome views out across the marshes and River Alde towards Martello tower CC and the lost village of Slaughden.

Archaeology has revealed Barbers Point to have been a hugely important site for early Christian settlers – and the sense of mystery and magic of the place only touches those who take the time to visit. Definitely an Aldeburgh top tip!
