Christmas Window Competition

Well done to O&C Butcher, Riley and Riley and Tilley and Grace for winning our coveted 'Best Dressed Window' award. Many of the windows in the High Street look lovely and reflect the imagination and enthusiasm of the staff. Aldeburgh's Mayor Jocelyn Bond had a tough choice choosing the winners so well done everyone that took part!

January Business Association Breakfast

Christmas is nearly here - we hope trade has been good and that you have a successful festive holiday. Do join us on Wednesday 3 January 08.00am at The Wentworth for what is sure to be a delicious breakfast and an opportunity to compare notes and review 2017 with other business owners and representatives of Aldeburgh organisations. Please let me know if you plan to attend so that we can ensure there is enough for everyone.

The popular seaside town of Aldeburgh will be buzzing on Saturday 2nd December 2017 when the Jubilee Hall throws open its doors to Christmas shoppers who will browse a range of gifts from local traders, enjoy the school choir and visit Santa.

Mulled wine, mince pies and children's refreshments will be available throughout the event which opens at 11am and closes at 4pm.

The town trail can be completed by children, with a prize for every correct entry, and there will be demonstrations and attractions along the High Street throughout the day. A small funfair will be set up near Moot Hall. The grand finale will be the switching on of the lights at 4pm.

Sally Odgen is chair of Aldeburgh Business Association. She said:
“The event last year was a great success, so much so that we have decided to start earlier in the day. Santa will be on his sleigh with sacks of presents for the children and there will be the opportunity to chat with friends over a mince pie."

“We have also brought back the town trail to encourage families to visit all the shops in our unique High Street. The shops are taking part by arranging events of their own - cheese making, creating Aldeburgh Pebbles, Latte Art, a popular author's book signing and wine tasting are just a few. And it's not too late for more retailers to get involved.

“There is no need to travel further afield if you are looking for a festive day out and some original Christmas gifts, we have hand-picked some very talented stallholders who will offer lots of brilliant ideas. Among the goodies on offer will be festive beers, handmade decorations, artisan chocolate, unique stationery, delightful skincare, inspiring ceramics, to die for jewellery and some very special cycling kit!

“To keep up to date with news about the event take a look at the Aldeburgh Christmas Lights Facebook page and share it with your friends and family!”

Most of the stalls for the event have been booked but there are a few remaining, local businesses that want to take part with a stall or in-shop demonstration can still contact Sally at: A percentage of profits from the event will be donated to East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Aldeburgh celebrates the Christmas lights switch on ceremony

As well as a chance for people to see the colourful, twinkling lights, it was a big weekend for traders as people flocked to the shops to start buying the essential presents.

TV and radio broadcaster Emma Freud was the guest of honour and was accompanied by carnival queen Hannah Osborne, and her princesses Bonnie Butterworth, Ellie Philpot, and Matilda Salter, mayor Sara Fox, and poster competition winner Sam Strowger, to press the plunger to light up Aldeburgh for Christmas.

The switch-on followed a full day of festive activities, including a variety of music on the main stage, with pop and praise, a brass band and singers.

Around the town there was wine and food tasting events, masterclasses ranging from photography to gift wrapping, plus fairground rides, face painting and storytime sessions.

Naomi Tarry, chairman of the Aldeburgh Business Association, which organised the event, said: “The day was a resounding success and it was super to see the High Street full of people enjoying the atmosphere.”
